There’s just two days left of the 2004 Dakar Rally, which finishes on Sunday. Today, Friday January 16, the competitors face the last really tough stage, from Tidjika to Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania.

The bike section is currently headed by Spanish rider Nani Roma on the KTM 660 LC4, leading fellow KTM riders, Frenchmen Richard Sainct and Cyril Despres. The only non-KTM in the top 30 positions is the Yamaha 2-Trac two-wheel drive WR450 ridden by David Fretigne, which is currently in eight place. Fretigne won his third stage of the rally on Wednesday, January 14.

” At the start of the race, everyone thought that a 450cc wouldn’t manage anything on this Dakar but I was confident about the bike. Now, not only am I close to the goal of finishing the rally but I also win one of the special stages in Africa, ” said Fretigne after his win.

British rider Michael Extance is currently in 47th place on his Honda XR650.
