Pavey crashes out of Dakar

British-based BMW rider Simon Pavey has been forced out of the Dakar rally with a broken collarbone.

The 36-year-old Australian and off-road instructor crashed just 30km from the end of Friday’s 750km special stage. Pavey had been riding with British rider Mick Extance to help him navigate in the darkness. A large bump unbalanced his BMW and caused him to crash heavily.

If Pavey had made the last 30km he would have been rewarded with two days rest as the 10th and 11th stages have been cancelled. This is because Mauritians who attempted a military coup back in January are thought to be in Mali.

The Rally continues again, Monday, January 12 from Bobo Dioulasso.
