Rutter extends BSB lead

Ryuichi Kiyonari and Gregorio Lavilla shared one win apiece at Snetterton today, Sunday July 10, 2005, but it was Michael Rutter who extended his championship lead despite a broken collarbone from a crash in qualifying.

The first race saw Kiyonari move into the lead early on, and break away from pole sitter Leon Haslam. The Airwaves Ducati rider was unable to match the pace of Kiyonari, who broke the lap record twice to build a comfortable cushion. The third podium place went to John Reynolds in his 200th race, benefitting from engine failure for Stobart’s Michael Laverty. Also finishing early were Gregorio Lavilla, Chris Burns and Glen Richards.

James Haydon claimed fourth, with championship leader Michael Rytter taking fifth.

In race two Lavilla and Laverty reversed their fortunes to finish first and second, with Rutter taking third to extend his lead over team-mate Kiyonari after the Japanese rider crashed out on lap five.

Polesitter Haslam faced bad luck when he had to retire from third place after his Airwaves Ducati began to smoke and he was shown the black and orange flag.

James Haydon crashed out of fourth place on lap six but team-mate John Reynolds underlined his return to form with a solid fourth place. Steve Plater took fifth, Ben WIlson sixth on the Vivaldi Kawasaki, and Chris Burns finished tenth on his first race weekend since leaving MotoGP.

In the Supersport race, Leon Camier took a win on the Padgetts Honda, followed by Pere Riba, and Cal Crutchlow. Jamie Robinson and Rob Frost rounded out the top five, with nine retirements, including Stuart Easton and Craig Jones.
