Teenage bike racers in the UK will now be able to race in more classes due to an age limit reduction by the Auto Cycle Union.

Following a number of requests from licence holders, with immediate effect the minimum age limit for 250cc two-stroke twin cylinder production, 400cc four-stroke production and 650cc four-stroke twin cylinder production machines has been reduced to National licence holders aged 15 years of age, rather than the previous limit of 16.

“The Road Race Committee recognises the jump in performance and weight between 125cc and 600cc is significant,” said the ACU’s Jim Parker. “By allowing 15 year olds with a National licence to ride this intermediate class of machine, they will gain the experience necessary to compete successfully on a 600 machine.”

The new limits are:

15 year old Novice licence holder – up to 125cc GP machine
15 year of Clubman licence holder – up to 500cc 2-cylinder 4-stroke machine
15 year old National licence holder OR 16 year old Novice Licence Holder – 250cc 2-stroke, 400cc 4-stroke production based machines or up to 650cc 2-cylinder 4-stroke
