James Stewart scored his fifth AMA Supercross win of the season but he had to come from the back to beat Chad Reed and Tim Ferry at Houston, Texas on Saturday night.

A massive 49.973 fans filled the Reliant Stadium to see Kawasaki’s Ferry make the holeshot while his team-mate and current points leader Stewart was making his way through field after a sixth-place start.

Stewart struck early and often and eventually found the lead on lap six. Once in the lead, Stewart cruised to the easy win by a comfortable 17.316 margin. Yamaha’s Reed was second from Ferry.

Stewart now holds a 21-point lead in the series. He said: “I had a big crash earlier in practice and knew that this track could come back and bite me. I have the points lead but can’t afford to back down because things can get bad when you start to let up.”

Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto won the Supercross Lites class from Jason Lawrence and Josh Grant.

Results: 1 James Stewart (Kaw), 2 Chad Reed (Yam), 3 Tim Ferry (Kaw), 4 Kevin Windham (Hon), 5 Travis Preston (Hon), 6 Michael Byrne (Suz).
Points: 1 Stewart 147, 2 Reed 126, 3 Ferry 110, 4 Byrne 88, 5 Windham 84, 6 Preston 76.
