Ben Saunders wins Motocross Superclass at Tirley Scramblebank

1 of 1

Worcester’s Ben Saunders did enough to control the AMCA’s Superclass Championship on Sunday at the second, concluding round of the season-opening series.

The Delkevic Kawasaki rider won the opener and took second in moto two to tie Clinton Barrs for the overall on the day, but seal the Superclass crown by a tidy 16 points.

With a decent start, Saunders and Barrs soon demoted the fast-starting Tom Fish in moto one, but it was Saunders who came out on top of the battle for the win.

In the second race, however, it was reigning AMCA Open class champion David Campbell who rounded turn one in first.

Ben Saunders, who conceded the Open title to Campbell after the most unfortunate of circumstances at the last race of the championship last year, made short work of his rival as the snow began to fall, taking the lead on the second lap, but the Fowlers KTM of Barrs followed him through.

Barrs, showing himself to be a genuine contender for Campbell’s crown this year, stayed with former British Under 21 champion Saunders and managed to put a telling pass on in the closing stages.

With the meeting cut down to just two races per class, Barr’s second moto victory was enough to give him the winner’s trophy, but the crown of Superclass champion went to Saunders, ahead of Barrs and 2007 AMCA 125 Champion Brad O’Leary.
