Yamaha YZF-R125 Cup launched in Italy

A totally new single-make Italian race series has been launched in Italy at the Verona Motorcycle Show this weekend for the Yamaha YZF-R125.

Budding Valentino Rossi wannabes between the age of 14 and 18 will get to race the single-cylinder four-strokes over five rounds in 2009 to encourage more youngster s to the sport.

Participants get a reduced rate on the standard bike and Yamaha throw in a race kit for the scaled-down R6 lookalike including a 180 Malossi big bore kit  and race plastics.

There will be restrictions however. None of the entrants can have previous racing experience but the winner of the championship will reportedly get a slot in the Yamaha Superstock 600 team in the Italian Championship.

Each rider will get tuition at a race school before the start of the season.

The first race weekend takes place on April 4-5 at the Pomposa circuit.
