BSB Rider of the Year: 5th - Peter Hickman

1 of 1

After another epic season of racing, MCN’s sports team of Michael Guy (Sports Editor), Simon Patterson (MotoGP Reporter) and Oli Rushby (Superbike Reporter) sat down to discuss who impressed them the most in each race series we cover to establish MCN’s top five riders in each category.

And with this year’s BSB championship closer than ever, it wasn’t an easy call to decide who deserved what spot in our top five riders of the year in the class. Here’s what we think –  but feel free to disagree with us in the comments!

5th: Peter Hickman

Not only did Peter Hickman enjoy an incredible season on the roads in 2017, but he also clocked up his best ever year in British Superbikes to finish fourth in the championship.

While Hickman ‘only’ won one race and took just two further podiums, it was sheer consistency that paid off for the Smiths BMW rider in 2017.

The tall Lincolnshireman only failed to finish one race this year, which can easily be forgiven considering the race in which he fell was the carnage that was the second race at Silverstone, which saw just seven riders upright at the point the red flag came out.

In the 25 races he did finish, he finished no lower than ninth and was regularly within the top six to earn his spot in the all-important Showdown and it’d be consistency that helped him overhaul Jake Dixon to finish fourth in the series overall.
