Rossi, riding the factory Honda RCV, crossed the line six seconds in front of Biaggi on the Camel Pons Honda bike. Bayliss claimed the third step on the podium as the leading Ducati, after the retirement of Loris Capirossi on lap fifteen.

Other retirements from the race were Rossi’s works teammate Nicky Hayden, and the two Spaniards Sete Gibernau and Carlos Checa, at their home GP.

Fourth place went to Camel Honda’s Tohru Ukawa, from Alex Barros, Makoto Tamada, John Hopkins, Shinya Nakano, Nobuatsu Aoki and Olivier Jacque. Noriyuki Haga claimed twelfth on the Aprilia, just ahead of British rider Jeremy McWilliams.
