Valentino Rossi won the opening round of the 2005 MotoGP championship after a titanic battle with Sete Gibernau which saw the pair collide on the final corner.

What the riders, teams and officials have to say about that last lap clash PLUS: Translated: What the Spanish crowd was chanting at Rossi PLUS amazing as-it-happened pictures PLUS Shakey’s shocking scooter smash – only in MCN out on Wednesday.

Gibernau lead for 95 per cent of the race, but Rossi was constantly shadowing his every move. With two laps left, the Italian made the pass, and looked sure for the win until a mistake with half a lap left saw Gibernau retake the lead.

The final run to the flag was a no-holds-bar affair, with both riders out to claim first blood in the championship. The pair swapped places, and with Rossi in second, swapped paint as they collided on the final corner. Rossi was able to hold his line to take the win, while Gibernau was focred to run across the gravel trap before showing his anger as his crossed the line with a strange hand signal.

Nicky Hayden crashed out of third place in the closing stages, leaving Marco Melandri to climb the final podium step.

Race day has already seen a win for reigning champion Daniel Pedrosa in the 250cc class, and Marco Simoncelli has capped a dominant weekend with victory in the 125cc event. Britain’s Chaz Davies has started 2005 well, with a solid 11th place on the Aprilia Germany bike.
