Bayliss surprised but happy at Stoner form

Reigning World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss has spoken of his surprise and delight at fellow Aussie Casey Stoner’s brilliant start to the MotoGP world championship.

Stoner has won plaudits around the world for the superb start to his factory Ducati career that has seen him win three out of the opening four races in 2007.

Now veteran Bayliss has added his name to the growing list of Stoner admirers after the 21-year-old visited last weekend’s Monza World Superbike clash.

He caught up with compatriot Bayliss, who he lives close to in Monaco, and Bayliss said: “I’ve seen some of the races and I’m really happy for Ducati and with how Casey is riding. I know him well and I think he’s surprised everybody. He’s surprised me. People didn’t think he could do what he’s done – but he did.”

Bayliss spent two years in Ducati’s factory MotoGP team in 2003 and ’04, claiming four podiums before he was controversially axed at the end of 2005.

He returned for a one-off ride at the last round in Valencia last season to replace injured Spaniard Sete Gibernau and claimed a sensational victory.

Speaking to MCN, Bayliss added: “It’s really come together for Casey and he’s happy with how the team is working with him and that makes him so strong. The way the tyres and the bike work have made him even better. The new 800s really suit him and his 250 style and he’s made that Ducati his bike.”

Stoner returns to track action this weekend in Le Mans, where he defends a 15-point lead over Yamaha rival Valentino Rossi.
