Italian MotoGP: Marco Simoncelli wins in Mugello after collision with Hector Barbera

1 of 1

Marco Simoncelli has taken his first 250GP win in contentious circumstances as he collided with Hector Barbera on their final time down the straight.

Simoncelli  and Barbera battled it out throughout the race , but it wasn’t until the penultimate lap that it got interesting as both riders came on to the straight together.

Barbera moved out of Simoncelli’s slipstream to go for the overtake just as the Gilera rider swerved to the left. The two bikes collided and Barbera’s front wheel locked sending him sliding down the tarmac at 160mph in front of the pits.

Barbera was uninjured but questions were raised  over the legality of the move.

Alex Debon took second place with Thomas Luthi in third. Brit Eugene Laverty took 13th place.
