Valentino Rossi bemoans loss of qualifying tyres

Six-times MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has bemoaned the loss of qualifying tyres under the new single tyre rule for 2009.

The Fiat Yamaha rider is worried that Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session will be mush less of a spectacle without the super soft qualifying tyres.

The final stages of qualifying were also highly charged affairs with pole position sometimes swapping places more than ten times.

That entertainment factor has vanished with the single tyre rule meaning qualifiers are no longer required and riders will now have to claim their grid positions by using race rubber.

Rossi’s solution was to keep two qualifying tyres in the single tyre rule to maintain the excitement at the end of qualifying.

The 30-year-old told MCN: “I really liked the qualifying tyres and my idea was to have the one tyre rule, but keep two qualifying tyres for the end to help the show. But I was told no.”
