Bradley Smith finally got his first chance to lap on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1 at the Valencia track in Spain today.

The British rider completed an eight-lap stint on Bridgestone rain tyres on a damp track after torrential rain and strong winds battered the Ricardo Tormo track overnight.

The 21-year-old set a best time of 1.48.249 in his first run out on the YZR-M1 he will race alongside compatriot Cal Crutchlow next year.

Smith endured a frustrating start to his MotoGP career yesterday when he sat in the pits for the entire day as cold temperatures and rain ruined the first day of 2013 winter testing.

With new asphalt slow to dry, only Aleix Espargaro, Ducati test rider Michele Pirro, Andrea Iannone and Hector Barbera are the only riders to have been out on track under grey and gloomy skies.

Moto2 world champion Marc Marquez has still to complete a lap on Honda’s factory RC213V machine.
