Marquez admits Lorenzo remains favourite

Marc Marquez has said that although he was 0.2 faster today in qualifying, Jorge Lorenzo should still be the favourite for the race due to his blisteringly fast race pace.

The Spanish rookie, who has won the past four races, took two seconds off the existing outright lap record at Silverstone to take P1 on the grid with a lap that even surprised him.

“I really didn’t expect the lap time I set. The first tyre was much quicker than I had expected, then I went back out on the second tyre and it felt really good. So I pushed on and managed to set a great lap time.”

However, he says that the consistent speed of the reigning world champion means he’ll be dangerous tomorrow in the race. Having watched his fellow Spaniard in earlier sessions, he said that the rhythm with which Lorenzo can put together fast laps is worrying.

“Lorenzo is the favourite for tomorrow. He did a very good FP4 session, with very good rhythm. I think Lorenzo has a great pace for tomorrow, but hopefully we can close that in a little and run with him. We have some things to try in warmup to close the gap.”

Lorenzo was cagey about his chances, admitting that he has a good race pace but saying that it would be a challenge to break the momentum established by Marquez.

“We have a good race pace, and I’m really satisfied with it, but in the last four races we haven’t won, so we need to change the dynamic. We were struggling until the FP4 session, but we made some changes that have left me feeling so much more confident for tomorrow.”
