Surprise fastest lap from Petrucci on day two of test

Danilo Petrucci was a surprise fastest man on the second day of 2016 MotoGP pre-season testing at Sepang, making the most of an odd day to finish 0.06 ahead of reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Completing his fastest lap of the day early on and utilising the soft tyres, Petrucci was one of a few able to get in a fast lap on the soft rubber before a horror crash for Loris Baz forced Michelin to withdraw the option, as well as bringing out the red flags and eating up valuable track time.

That, combined with hot track temperatures in the afternoon that saw few take to track for an extended period, left the Italian top of the table, with only a late effort from Lorenzo coming close to stealing it from him.

Hector Barbera was another who benefitted from conditions to finish third, as an inmpressive week for Ducati continues. Marc Marquez was fourth, ahead of an improving Cal Crutchlow in fifth, while Valentino Rossi completed the top six.

Casey Stoner was an impressive ninth, running on the older GP15 machine but still managing to finish just behind the factory GP16 machine of Andrea Iannone.

The Australian double world champion is expected now to sit out the third and final day of testing however, which gets underway at 2am UK time tomorrow morning.
