MotoGP: ‘Stressful’ last lap for Dovi

Andrea Dovizioso has admitted that despite his stunning final corner success over Marc Marquez at last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, the final lap of the race was ‘stressful’ for him, knowing that the Repsol Honda rider would make a move on him at some point as they entered the lap.

“Every time, Marc tries in the last lap, always. In the last lap, it was very difficult for me, because I was losing a lot in the two left corners and I knew it would be really easy for him to overtake me there. I closed the door, but he caught me again and had a chance to try again.

“I didn’t expect him to try in the last corner, because there is no space there. But I heard his engine, knew he had prepared the corner better than me, and that he was preparing to try. I left the door open, because if I had closed it he would have hit me and won. But I was faster than him on the exit and I was able to win. It was a very stressful last lap!”

And while the move didn’t work for Marquez in the end, Dovi admitted that he wasn’t best pleased with the surprise move given how close the pair were running on track.

To win in the last corner is always something special, especially against Marc. But I was more angry than happy with him afterwards! It is not a corner to try and overtake riders, and that’s why I gave him a wave – but everyone knows what Marc is like, and you have to try and manage the situation!”
