Moto3: Canet fastest at Jerez day one

Estrella Galicia 0,0 Honda rider Aron Canet has topped a rain-struck opening day of Moto3 action at Jerez, heading the opening day from former teammate Enea Bastianini and another impressive performance from Marco Bezzecchi on a rain-struck opening day.

Raining on and off again all day but never coming down heavy enough to leave the track suitable for wet tyres, Canet completed only nine laps in the middle of the day’s three sessions at the test where the Moto3 riders are sharing track time with Moto2.

Alonso Lopez was fourth, leading Jorge Martin and Philipp Oettl, while the class’s only British rider John McPhee was 13th, one place ahead of the Red Bull KTM Ajo machine of Darryn Binder, with the South African admitting afterwards that the day was largely wasted for them.

“Unfortunately we have not been able to put in many laps. During the first session we went out to do three laps to see what feeling we had. Then in the middle session I felt good from the beginning and we wanted to focus on the feeling with the front end; just when we had found the right setup, it started to rain.

“However, I’m feeling better all the time and we are eager to ride more. Hopefully the weather tomorrow is better and we can ride all day. I want to feel more comfortable on the bike and go faster. If the conditions are wet, we will also go out to test the wet setup.”

The three-day test continues tomorrow.
