Moto3: Oettl wins as Canet wipes out championship rivals

1 of 1

Philipp Oettl has taken his first Moto3 win at the Spanish Grand Prix after a drama-filled race that saw Aron Canet wipe out most of the championship leaders with an ill-advised overtaking manoeuver.

The race turned into a typical Moto3 scrap with an 18-rider battle for the lead after 15 of the 22 laps, but while the leaders were changing places it was a late lunge from Canet that wiped out Jorge Martin, Enea Bastianini and Tony Arbolino as well as himself.

That left Oettl and Marco Bezzecchi to contest the last lap, with the German putting on a textbook defensive last lap to take his debut win. Alonso Lopez was originally credited with third before being demoted behind Marcos Ramirez for exceeding track limits.

Brit John McPhee was also a faller, colliding with Lorenzo Dalla Porta and Dennis Foggia in the second corner of the race and taking down all three of them.
