MotoGP: Jorge Martin to miss Argentine Grand Prix following hand surgery

Jorge Martin has been ruled out of the second round of the 2025 MotoGP season in Argentina following surgery on his left hand.

Martin missed the majority of pre-season testing after suffering a fractured metacarpal in his right hand and multiple fractures to the metatarsals of his left foot on the opening day of the Sepang Test.

Surgery was required on his hand, and it was unclear whether or not he would make this weekend’s season opener in Thailand. The decision was unfortunately made for Martin when it was revealed that the reigning champion had suffered another injury whilst training on his supermoto bike.

This time Martin fractured the radius in his left hand, whilst also damaging his scaphoid bone – a bone which can take a long time to heal. The Spaniard has since undergone surgery, which included two screws being placed to secure the radius fracture, plus another screw to stabilise the scaphoid.

“For sure he won’t be in Argentina,” Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola told MotoGP.com. “I want to have him in very good shape, I don’t want to rush any recovery and put him on the bike when he is not fit. I would prefer to see the new era with Jorge in the long-term rather than the very short-term.”

Missing the opening two rounds puts Martin at a huge disadvantage and allows his main title rivals, namely Pecco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez, the chance to open up a huge points advantage whilst the Aprilia rider is out of action.

His injuries mean Martin has completed just 90 laps onboard the RS-GP since switching from the Prima Pramac Ducati team at the end of the season. 77 of those laps came at the Barcelona Test in November, just two days after winning the title onboard the Desmosedici.

The earliest that we’ll see Martin onboard the number one Aprilia this year will be on the opening day of the American Grand Prix at COTA on March 30. Of course, Martin will need to pass fitness tests in order to do so, and even then, will likely need time to get up to speed.

In the meantime, Lorenzo Savadori replaces Martin this weekend in Thailand, whilst Marco Bezzecchi will naturally lead the project for the time being as Martin’s teammate. Like Martin, Bezzecchi has also jumped from Ducati machinery, and enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign.

The Italian finished third overall at the Thailand Test earlier this month, a test which included a seriously impressive sprint simulation. His best lap-time of 1:29.060 was the quickest Aprilia lap ever recorded at the Buriram circuit.
