Niccolo Antonelli has topped the opening day of action in the Moto3 class at Barcelona’s Montmelo circuit, finishing up nearly 0.3 clear after topping both of the day’s sessions.
The Italian was ahead of Spaniard Jorge Navarro, with championship leader Brad Binder only another 0.1 behind in third – although with traffic halting Antonelli’s fastest lap, it may be that he is capable of pushing the pace even faster.
Hiroki Ono was a surprise fourth, holidng off Jules Danilo and Juanfran Guevara, with the first of the Team Sky VR46 KTMs Andrea Migno in seventh, just ahead of teammate Romano Fenati. Khairul Idham Pawi and Aron Canet rounded out the top ten.
Scotsman John McPhee was 28th, unable to use the benefits from testing after the last round in Mugello to capitalise as much as he had hoped to.
