Scott Russell could be set for a dramatic return to World Superbikes after an absence of five years.

He last rode in the 1998 championship on a Yamaha YZF750, but he has been testing recently with AMA Superbike team HMC Ducati (click on the link on the right to read more about that test), a team with ambitions beyond the American domestic series.

Team owner Mitch Hansen said: ” We’ve got some hurdles to get over first, but one of our sponsorship opportunities would be to take Scott back to World Superbikes. ”

HMC had invited Russell to test with it as its number one rider Doug Chandler looked likely to sign for Honda in 2003.

With that deal now confirmed, Chandler will race in the AMA Supersport 600 and Formula Extreme series, the stage is set for an amazing return to the big time for Russell after he was almost killed in a start-line crash at the Daytona 200 in 2001.
