Brno World Superbikes: Max Biaggi goes fastest in free practice one

Max Biaggi surprised everyone to go fastest in the first free practice session in Brno onboard his Alstare Suzuki.

Biaggi is traditionally a slow starter and rarely shows his real pace until race day but at the Czech track, where he has won in 250 and 500GP, the Italian was a quick starter and then upped the pace in the final minutes to lead by a significant 0.312 seconds.

Britain’s James Toseland ended the opening session in second place onboard his Hannspree Ten Kate Honda.

With track temperatures nearly 20 degrees hotter than they were in testing three weeks ago, the outright grip level was down meaning that at this stage lap times aren’t as fast.

Behind James Toseland are his two main championship rivals Troy Bayliss and Noriyuki Haga.

Haga set the pace early on before dropping to fourth, whilst Troy Bayliss spent the majority of the session outside the top five before upping his pace to go third.

Last year’s double race winner Yukio Kagayama once again looked fast and comfortable around the undulating circuit.

With his Alstare Suzuki working well he ended to first session in fifth spot, although he was nearly a second slower than his teammate Max Biaggi.

Yamaha man Troy Corser claimed sixth position and will be looking to find more speed this afternoon at a track where he has traditionally performed well.
