Misano resurfaced with hours to spare ahead of world Superbikes

The Misano circuit had over 500 metres of tarmac replaced less than 48 hours before the World Superbike’s top men got out on track due to an excessive amount of bumps around the revised circuit.

Concerns over the bumps were raised after the factory World Superbike Yamaha and Ducati teams tested at the circuit for the first time last month (May 2007).

Their claims the track was too bumpy were backed up by MotoGP stars Valentino Rossi and Loris Capirossi who completed a handful of laps onboard road motorcycles to asses the situation prior to MotoGP returning to the Italian track in September.

MotoGP’s Rossi and Capirossi highlighted three areas which needed attention, but there wasn’t enough time to replace all of them so only one section of the track was able to be resurfaced in time for this weekends WSB race.

When the World Superbike teams arrived in the paddock to set up on Wednesday four centimetres of the track had been planed in preparation for the new surface.

Hours later the new tarmac was laid and then the evening was spent bedding the new tarmac down using a truck with a trailer loaded with concrete weights.

Initial feedback on the resurfaced section was lacking grip but circuit owners are keen to avoid any repeat of the Laguna Seca fiasco last year when parts of the newly resurfaced track broke up.

In the first practice sessions ahead of this weekend’s World Superbike rounds the Superstock riders, first out on track, complained about their poor times.

The track is reported to be sweating in the 33 degree heat, but seems to be improving as each new group takes to the Misano circuit.
