Legends back on track

Unexpected stars at the Phillip Island WSB event included some of the series’ most famous riders of the past, and a much-appreciated reappearance for the first ever champion.

Fred Merkel, who won the first two title in 1988 and 1989 on a Honda RC30, was the guest of honour on a roster of legends all rolled out because of their resonance with Aussie fans.

Local heroes Rob Phillis, Kevin Magee, Peter Goddard, Kiwi legend Aaron Slight, and Merkel, now living in Australia, were joined by Ducati team boss Davide Tardozzi who nearly won the first title as part of the season’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
They entertained crowds in a press conference for the series in the paddock, which basically saw them taking the Mickey out of each after completing a couple of parade laps on track.
