WSB Assen: Spies again in first free practice

Yamaha sensation Ben Spies continued his stranglehold of practice and qualifying by topping the time sheets once again, first time out at Assen.

The Yamaha man powered his R1 to first place after overhauling Alstare Suzuki rider Max Neukirchner in the process.

Ten Kate Honda rider Carlos Checa survived a fire on his number one bike five minutes into the session but was still able to secure third fastest.

Leon Haslam was once again top Brit by posting an impressive lap time good enough for fourth spot.

The Stiggy Honda rider made a much better start than his team-mate John Hopkins who crashed and is now out of the meeting after dislocating his hip.

First qualifying for Sunday’s two WSB races takes place at 4.15pm local time.
