Kyalami WSB: Regis Laconi Injury Update

1 of 1

Regis Laconi, who crashed heavily during Friday’s opening Free Practice session, remains in a serious but stable condition this morning.

An updated diagnosis from the Sunninghill Hospital in Sandton on the outskirts of Johannesburg revealed that he has broken two cervical vertebrae (C3 and C5). He has severe concussion and a bruised lung but the latest CT scan has so far shown that there is no neurological damage.

The 11 time WSB race winner has been put into a medically induced coma to ensure he remains completely still and was initially due to undergo surgery on his broken vertebrae last night.

However after consultation South African neuro-surgeon Dr Maurizio Zorzi from the capital Pretoria it was decided not to operate immeadiatley and to postpone the operation for a few days.

Doctors believe that it will be a further three weeks before a clear diagnosis of Laconi’s condition can be made, in which time he will have to remain totally immobile.
