Having withdrawn from this weekend’s WSB round at Misano along with next weeks Aragon race, James Toseland has revealed to MCN the reasons behind his decision and the extent of his career threatening injuries.

Speaking to MCN the former two time WSB champion revealed that the day he was due to fly to Misano this his injured wrist was so painful he couldn’t even brush his teeth.

He said: “Immediately after the race in America I didn’t really have any extra pain but after about four days my wrist became very swollen and that was pushing on the nerves, which made it very painful.

“I went to see my surgeon and had an MRI scan and a x-ray and the good news is that there is no additional damage, it’s just highlighted that at this stage riding a Superbike is just too much for it. My surgeon couldn’t even believe I was able to ride in America at all because what I’ve had really is a serious injury.”

Up until the American race, Toseland was convinced that riding his BMW Motorrad Italia S1000RR would be the best physiotherapy for his wrist, but has now resigned him self to the fact that he can’t ride.

“I thought that riding was good physio for it but it’s not. The advice I’ve been given is that I have to rest it for four weeks because doing anything else would be a big risk and I’m not talking about it being a bit sore it’s an injury that might never recover.”

With four weeks until the Brno race in the Czech Republic Toseland is doing everything possible to get back to fitness including purchasing a specialist cooling and compression machine along with time in a hydro baric chamber and two sessions a day with a physiotherapist. This along with the operation itself has cost Toseland in excess of £15,000 so far – highlighting his resolve and determination to do everything he can to get back to racing.

“I want to come back fully fit so if I have to sit out for two races, but I end up getting another ten years of riding then that’s what I’ll do. This injury would be the prefect get out clause if I wanted to stop racing because it’s serious enough, but I don’t. I’m still hungry and I want to come back, come back and do well. The plan is to be back for Brno with the aim of being fully fit for Silverstone.”

Toseland will be replaced by Italian Lorenzo Lanzi at Misano and Aragon.
