Aragon WSB: Superpole Sykes takes the top spot

Reigning champion and Superpole master Tom Sykes has stormed to pole position for the first European races of the year, 0.2 seconds faster than his factory Kawasaki teammate Loris Baz with his 1’56.479 lap.

French Aprilia rider Sylvain Guintoli was third, a further 0.1 behind Baz, while Davide Guigliano put the Ducati on the second row of the grid. His teammate Chaz Davies, initally fastest and threatening the front row, was unable to finish better than sixth after a crash at the midway point.

Jonathan Rea was fifth on the Pata Honda, with his teammate Leon Haslam also a faller, finishing the second Superpole session last in 12th after crashing out on his opening lap.

THe second Aprilia of Marco Melandri was seventh, slipping down the timesheets after being consistently fast all weekend. In 8th and 9th were the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki pair of Eugene Laverty and ALex Lowes, with Laverty suffering from engine problems earlier in the day; something he’ll be looking to avoid after already losing one of their allocated engines at Philip Island.

Leon Camier was eleventh, making it through to Superpole 2 after a late lap in the opening session, while Christian Iddon was 18th on the Bimota.
