Salom discharged from hospital after Superpole crash

Team Pedercini Kawasaki rider David Salom has been released from hospital after a high-speed crash during Superpole 2 for tomorrow’s Phillip Island opening round of the World Superbike Championship.

However, the Spaniard will not race tomorrow, after suffering a concussion and a broken finger after the crash at Phillip Island’s fourth gear turn twelve. Initially losing traction in the turn, he cartwheeled through the gravel trap awkwardly before appearing to lose consciousness.

After initial assessment at the circuit medical centre, he was transferred to the Royal Melbourne hospital for further checks, including a CT scan. His broken left third finger will require surgery, but the 2014 Evo champion will return to his native country for the operation.

The resulting red flag from his crash brought an early end to the Superpole session, handing Jonathan Rea pole position after Chaz Davies had his faster lap time struck off.
