WorldSBK: Mandatory pit stops confirmed for Phillip Island season opener

Pit stops will once again be mandatory at the World Superbike Championship season opener at Phillip Island next month due to concerns regarding unpredictable weather and range of track temperatures.

The precautionary measure was brought in last minute at the Australian circuit last season, and once again will be enforced in the Superbike and Supersport classes. The latter will be limited to 10 laps per rear tyre, with those in WorldSBK limited to 11 laps per rear tyre before coming in for pit stops.

As a result of the updated regulations for the opening weekend of the 2025 season, both of the feature WorldSBK races will be limited to 20 laps.

“Phillip Island is renowned for its thrilling, high-speed layout, but it also presents unique challenges due to its surface and rapidly changing weather,” Gregorio Lavilla, WorldSBK Executive Director said. “Despite improvements to the track conditions over time, the extreme demands on tyres remain a significant factor.

“Based on our experience at Phillip Island, we concluded that enforcing a mandatory pit stop is the best approach to uphold rider safety and the quality of the racing. By adopting this format, we’re ensuring that all participants can compete under fair and se22cure conditions at what promises to be an exciting start to the season.”

Pre-season testing is now underway in WorldSBK ahead of the opening round at Phillip Island on February 21-23. Riders are currently at Jerez for a two-day test, and will head to Portimao on February 28-29. The final pre-season test takes place at Phillip Island on February 17-18.
