Going for gold! UK mechanic heading to Japan to compete at the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix

British motorcycle mechanic Liam Coffey will represent the UK at the Yamaha World Technician Grand Prix (WTGP) in Japan later this year, after being crowned the best in Europe, following a decisive win in the Netherlands in May 2025.

The WTGP pits the best Yamaha technicians from across the globe against each other in a series of rigorous technical and customer service challenges – from fault diagnostics and repair to communication and inspection.

Usually held every two years, the contest returns in 2025 following a five-year break forced by Covid.

Coffey secured his place at the world final by winning the UK round in December, before going on to beat top-level techs from across Europe at the regional final on May 11-12.

“Winning the European round was an incredible feeling,” said Coffey. “It was a tough competition with some seriously talented technicians, so to come out on top was a real honour. It makes all the hard work and dedication worthwhile.”

Coffey has worked within the Yamaha network for 25 years, having joined as an apprentice straight out of college. He now works at QBS Powersports, in Essex.

There are currently over 34,000 Yamaha Technical Academy-certified technicians globally, with only a handful making it to the world stage.

“Liam’s achievements are a fantastic reflection of his dedication and the quality of service provided by our dealer network,” said Dan Palmer, Yamaha UK National Sales Manager.
