125cc bikes are incredibly popular at the moment as they’re incredibly easy to ride, cheap to buy, run and insure. Of the 16,800 naked bikes sold in 2011, the top two models were both 125s – the Honda CBF125 and Yamaha YBR125.
125s generally occupy the lowest insurance bands, with the Yamaha YBR125 Custom occupying insurance group two.
"I thought it was great"
“I’ve never been on the road before, so when I got cover for £69 for my 125 I thought it was great.”
Paul Day, 39, Great Yarmouth
125s tend to be used as commuters, and as such cover a lot of miles compared to classic bikes or other bikes just used for the odd weekend ride, and as such the offer great value for money when it comes to cheap insurance.
While 125cc insurance is generally cheap, keep in mind that some models of 125 will be preferred by the younger market, and as such will be more expensive to insure due to younger, more inexperienced riders/excitable youths.
If you’re using your 125 for commuting purposes, think about something like a Honda CG125 or Suzuki VanVan, which will be cheaper to insure than an Aprilia RS125 and more practical too!
Bear in mind that insurance will be cheaper if you have a full motorcycle licence as oppose to a provisional licence that you get from CBT. So if you’re old enough to take you’re full test, take it.
It might be more expensive than CBT but you won’t have to retake it every two years like CBT and it’ll bring your insurance costs down. Also you won’t have to ride around with those ugly L plates stuck on.
