'Camera numbers will fall' - Roads Minister

1 of 1

Road minister Stephen Ladyman has said he believes camera numbers will fall under new funding rules from April.

Fines will no longer go to local speed camera partnerships under the new rules, removing any incentive to issue as many speeding penalties as possible. The AA and RAC Foundation said two weeks ago that cameras could become a financial burden on local authorities and that some were likely to be deactivated.

Asked what he though would happen to camera numbers, Ladyman said: “I suspect they will fall.”

MCN challenged Ladyman on speed cameras in an exclusive interview last week and found he struggled to explain how we can be certain they have cut accidents.

We also won a promise from the minister that bikes would receive “beneficial treatment” in road pricing plans, but he would not rule out charging us altogether.
