New Suzuki GSX-R125 ready for 2008 - check out its rivals

In this week’s MCN (January 3, 2008) we brought you the first look at Suzuki’s new GSX-R125, which will be unveiled later this year.
The new water-cooled motorcycle will mimic the style and design of the rest of the GSX-R family, but with learner legal power and an easier ride.
The motorcycle is already complete – the design team are currently deciding on the final colour scheme, ready for launch in the second half of 2008.
The GSX-R125 will face stiff competition when it arrives in the UK – the four-stroke learner sports market is booming, with more machines going on sale in 2008.
Here’s a rundown of what the GSX-R125 will have to beat.
The Honda CBR125R is undoubtedly the class leader. The tiny Honda has been the outright top-selling motorcycle in the UK, not just the biggest selling 125.
The 14bhp single is easy to ride, well put together, cheap to buy and insure but is also an absolute hoot – even experienced riders can enjoy the simple charms of the Honda.
This is the first serious contender to the Honda CBR125’s crown, mimicking the best bits of the Honda but with more style and design closer to larger capacity R-series bikes.
Yamaha’s publicity material hinted the YZF-R125 is designed solely to beat the Honda CBR – but to beat the Honda in showrooms it will have to be priced competitively.
Megelli Sport 125 R
The Megelli Sport 125R is a new British contender – almost.
The engine comes from Taiwan, and the bikes will be built in China, but the design is from British design house Renfrew, who are responsible for various recent model Triumphs.
The 11bhp machine isn’t a direct competitor by Megelli’s own admission, but the firm hopes that at less than £2000, the Megelli Sport 125R will attract riders looking for a cheaper new bike without resorting to badly-built internet-bought Chinese machines.
Known in the bike world for its scooter range, the French factory occasionally turns out a geared machine and this is the latest.
The Peugeot XR-7 mimics the Yamaha R6 in styling (though doesn’t look quite as polished as the Yamaha R125), with a four-stroke 125 motor and a budget spec but flash looking chassis.
