MCN overall verdict rating is 5

Kawasaki has given the GTR a significant upgrade, added to the comfort of the original model with a larger screen and include heated grips as standard. But more interestingly they’ve improved the safety of their flagship tourer with new ABS and traction control. The traction control is really impressive and works off the ABS wheel sensors and is the most advanced system currently available on a road bike.

Thankfully Kawasaki has left the engine alone, which has been a strong point of the larger tourer. The powerplant is taken from the mighty ZZ-R1400 but detuned for more midrange. The GTR also now boasts variable valve timing, the first on any Kawasaki, which has the smoothest operation on the market, far better than Honda’s VFR. It also has nearly 140bhp and gallons of torque, both of which are class-leading.

Ride and Handling

Kawasaki hasn’t played around with the handling, either, which was not a fault of the old model. There’s a slightly stiffer spring at the rear, but that’s about it. For a large bike, the GTR can be hustled along with confidence, but you need a lot of confidence in the front Bridgestone tyre, which has been specifically designed for this model. The new linked ABS braking is excellent, and it’s changeable for riding fully loaded or with pillion and luggage.

This is an area where the old GTR lacked, especially when compared to the competition from BMW. However, Kawasaki has addressed this and now the GTR comes with more options as standard like heated grips, larger screen, ABS and traction control as standard. There is also an additional mode button on the left bar to scroll through the informative clocks while the electric screen is pre-programmable. Compare and buy parts for the GTR1400 in the MCN Shop.

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 5

There is no reason to question the Kawasaki 1400’s reliability as the ZZ-R14 on which it’s based is proving bulletproof and Kawasaki are renown for producing reliable motors. MCN ran the older GTR problem free for 30,000 mile in a year, without a glitch. Shaft drive will add to its longevity.

The GTR is expected to go up in price compared to the old model, however most bike prices have increased in 2009 and it’s still priced competitively against the competition from BMW and Yamaha. Second hand prices of the older model seem to be holding, too. Find a Kawasaki GTR1400 for sale.

NOT SURE I'D WANT ANOTHER.

Having owned a 2008 model GTR, on which I did 10,000 miles up until October '09 when it was written off in a classic "didn't see you mate" collision, my views of the GTR are somewhat mixed. Kawasaki have undoubtedly uped the ante with the 2010 model. However, it has still only really caught up with the competition rather than surpassed it. Heated grips should have always been standard on a bike in this class and the screen on the old model was appauling. Is the new one a re-design or is it simply their larger option which was previously available? If it is the old 'option' screen, my experince was that it isn't significantly better. In addition, it would have been nice if the new GTR had a hugger as standard as the rear shock gets plastered with crud. And waht about that annoying 'low fuel' warning that can't be over-ridden? Whilst the new safety features might temp buyers away from the likes of Honda and Yamaha and possibly even BMW, I would give a word of caution. Firstly, I found that the comfort levels deminished over the 12 months that I owned my 2008 GTR and even had extra padding fitted in the seat because of it. Also, if you are an all season rider like myself, the finish of the GTR is not good. Within a year I had both exhaust alloy end caps replaced under warranty due to corrosion and the first of these was going the same way again. Other parts were showing similar signs, with rust under the seat and other areas. Overall, the old GTR was a good and capable bike, let down by the finish and deminishing comfort. Even with the improvemenst of the 2010 model, I'm not sure I'd want another.
