The Moto Guzzi Stelvio is well built, sounds great, stylish, easy to handle, comfortable, practical and comes with that historic Moto Guzzi badge on the tank. It’s not as focussed as the BMW R1200GS Adventure on road and nowhere as accomplished off-road, but it doesn’t take itself as seriously either, it’s easy to ride and it comes with an air of exclusivity. To cap it all it’s cheaper than an equivalent-spec’d BMW too. Well worth a look if you’re after something a bit different.

To give the Stelvio NTX four-valve engine some extra grunt at lower revs, it has revised profile cams, new ignition and injection mapping, and a larger capacity air-box, made possible by shifting the battery on its side. There’s a new lighter-action clutch too. This motor will also appear in the standard Stelvio from now on. There is a noticeable amount more low and mid-range shove, but there’s still a bit of a pause around 5000rpm when the four-valve engine stops to catch its breath, then leaps the final way to its 8000rpm redline.

The Stelvio NTX is very manageable, far more so than its gigantic BMW competition. It carries it’s all-up, ready-to-go weight of 251kg (5kg less than the GS Adventure) very well at low speed. thanks to a low, two-way adjustable seat, which can be set at 820mm or 840mm. The two-position GS Adventure seat is 890/910mm tall. Town riding is made easy by an ultra-smooth throttle response, gearbox, clutch action and out on the mountain passes the steering is light, and the chassis and suspension set-up gives you lots of confidence. Pillions get a hard time on the back, though as panniers get in the way of their feet.

In true adventure-style, the Stelvio NTX comes with big panniers, spotlights, sump and engine protection and knobbly off-road tyres. It also comes with ABS, radial brakes and a single-sided swingarm/shaft drive as standard. It’s too early to say how the Stelvio NTX will fare in the reliability stakes, but it is well built and well finished. Guzzis have come of age since they’ve come under the Piaggio umbrella and quality has generally improved. The Stelvio NTX was actually developed in Aprilia’s high-tech factory in Noale.

Topping the eleven-grand mark, this is a very expensive motorcycle. It may be cheaper than a similar spec BMW R1200GS Adventure but it’s lack of ability compared to the German giant makes it seem a trifle dear. Find a Moto Guzzi Stelvio for sale.

    Firstly, there seems to be no comparison between an 08 and 09 models, the engine is improved to the point where they could have renamed it. Secondly real world on road handling is superb, if you're coming from a GS gmake sure you have a good long demo, it IS different but within a mornings ride you'll love it for the same reasons you love the GS, predictability and precision. Having said that, a standard Stelvio that I rode seemed to run wide, could have been the set up though. The engine is a peach, and you've still got the big vibes you get on a Boxer engine...plus a glorious exhaust note. I've given it 4* for reliability as I just don't no yet but the quality seems excellent, very well put together, but even that depends on your dealer so who knows.

Stelvio NTX

I've had my 09 NTX since September 09 and am very happy with it, there have been no problems whatsoever and the only bike I've had which compares was an 04 1150 GS Adventure which although had the edge off road was certainly not in the same class for comfort. In my job I frequently ride both a 1200GS and an 1150 GS and wouldn't swap the Stelvio for either...My one issue with the Stelvio is the tank size which is pathetic for a touring bike, however I am hoping the new 33litre tank can be retro fitted which will mean me keeping the Stelvio for a long time to come. Did I mention the gorgeous sound it makes???

Why do MCN compare it with the 1200 ADV?... standard GS has similar seat heights & can be lowered further... & without the massive 33 litre tank the standard (& more comparable) GS is a lot lighter than the Stelvio. Strange... ah well... nice bike... gorgeous sounding engine.
