Since 2004, Honda has had the learner sports bike market sewn up – the CBR125R flew out of showrooms faster than its larger capacity counterparts. Yamaha’s range had a gap for a 125 sport motorcycle, and the YZF-R125 fills that gap by combining the Honda’s easy-going ride with a little bit more poke and grown up looks – it’s actually slightly bigger than the YZF-R6 that inspired its styling!

Engine

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Yamaha YZF-R125’s all-new engine has a longer stroke than other 125 motorcycles to give more torque, but it’s still no arm-ripper. Instead, the YZF-R125 gives flexibility two-stroke rivals like the Aprilia RS125 can only dream of. The Yamaha will crawl along at walking pace with the clutch fully engaged, and opening the throttle will give smooth drive right to the redline. It’s good for an indicated 80mph, which will satisfy most riders stepping up from a moped.

Ride and Handling

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 5

For a motorcycle that costs a shade less than £3000, has a steel frame and unadjustable basic suspension, the Yamaha YZF-R125’s bloody good. The forks and shock have controlled damping which allows you to chuck the bike around back roads, but they’re not jarring on rough city streets.

Equipment

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Yamaha YZF-R125’s digital dash, Brembo brakes, under-slung GP-style exhaust and a proper sized R6-inspired body is the stuff of wet dreams when you’re 17. The full-size body makes it reasonably comfortable too – the footpegs aren’t too high, the handlebars are mounted on the fork tops so your wrists don’t take a pounding and the seat isn’t massively hard either. The seat is reasonably high though – shorties may be more comfortable on the Honda.

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Yamaha YZF-R125 is built in Europe, and although it doesn’t have a top-level finish, it looks sturdy enough. Previous Yamaha/Minarelli engines have been strong, and there’s nothing to suggest this new water-cooled lump will be anything different.

Value

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4
The Yamaha YZF-R125’s is a great introduction to sports bikes without the drawbacks of two-stroke rivals – but so is the Honda CBR125R for £300 less – if you pay RRP, which many don’t. The Yamaha is better suited to larger riders, is more composed when you thrash it and looks better, but otherwise they offer the same thing. It’s your decision whether it’s worth the extra.

I feel qualified to do a review on this bike, as I have had mine since May 08 and have done over 2,500 miles on it. I have a 52 mile commute a day on A roads which are a lot of fun. I brought this bike for two reasons, one it looks amazing and secondly as it is a 125 I was hoping to get a good MPG out of it. The bike did not disappoint on both occasions. The bike looks so much better in the flesh and the comment I get most from people is how big it is, think R6 size and your very close. The MPG is amazing on this bike a full tank cost me £14 to fill and will get me 300 miles if I treat it nicely around 270miles if I thrash it. So that around 100 mpg!! The engine is a 125cc 4 stroke built my Yamaha so it should be reliable, no problems yet, though I will say this gears 1 through to 4 are brisk and have good acceleration for a 125, though 5 is a bit of struggle and 6 is gutless just a cruising gear. To speed on A roads you’ll be hanging around 60pmh – 70mph and if you have a straight road, down hill will your head down your get 80mph at 10,00rpm. Not bad for a learner machine. Handling is great light and nimble, you can chuck it round corner which is great fun, and brakes are mind blowing but they do the job. The price was always a sore point £3000 I spent on mine, but with the amount of miles I was doing a year 12,000 there was no point in getting a second hand bike. The best colours to go for are either black of blue, mines black. The yellow is just sick and the white is for all the boy racers. Insurance well I’m 28, married I had a car license for 10 years with no points, my bike is garaged over night and I pay £240 fully comp!! I take my test next month so I can get rid of the L plates hopefully. Will I be trading up for a bigger bike? No though my dream bike is an R6, I wouldn’t get the mpg out of it that this gets which is the main reason I brought it. A great bike, not many people have them, I’ve only seen one on the road so far and hopefully give it a year of two there will be some lovely extras coming out for it, third party exhaust are just coming on the market now. Positives - Looks great, reliable 125 engine, goof handling, amazing 100 mpg Negatives – Price £3000, 5 and 6 gears are a bit gutless.

£700?! How long have you been riding? What's your NCB? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesnt a lower insurance group number mean a bike is cheaper to insure?

Thanks for the advice everyone. It's very much appreciated

i absolutely love my r125 and loads of people look at it a syou are going passed, its even better now i have passed my test and theres no L plates on it lol.

i put £10 worth of petrol in and get going on for 225 miles.

went to cleethorpes yesterday on it with a gpz500,virago,xr250 xr125 and a trans alp and they all said it was very nippy, i even got 85mph at one point and its standard so not bad for a four stroke lol.

the only problem is about 3 weeks ago i hit some diesel and came off on a roundabout but ah well its not too bad just a few scratches so i can say its built quite well as well :)

mines had no problems at all in the wet, then again i try and keep it away from rain. yea obviously its more like a rs125 than a cg...even more so conscidering the aprillias extremely restricted 2 stroke motor. and no its learner legal straight up, it comes as it is. i find the motor far from gutless and combimned with the brilliant handling its easy knee downs and perfect cornering. could do with a bit more pulling power but the new leo vince system claims a huge 30% increase which is loads for a 125. no anti theft as standard so stock up on locks as its sexy looks attract more chavs than a playground fight. ive a clean record and my insurance was 700 quid. hope this helps
