Cadwell Park BSB: Seeley claims Superstock title

Alastair Seeley became the first British champion to be crowned in the 2009 season when he won today’s Metzeler Superstock 1000cc race at Cadwell Park on his Relentless by TAS Suzuki.

The win maintained his 100% record from the year having won all nine races held so far and with the Championship sewn up, the 29-year old is expected to step up to the Superbike class for the remainder of the season.

Seeley’s cause was aided when Steve Brogan (Padgetts Honda), the only rider who could have prevented the Ulsterman taking the title, crashed out at the hairpin on the opening lap and ‘all’ Seeley needed to do was bring the bike home in first.

This he duly did and having never been headed during the 15 laps, he extended his lead to 78 points and with only 75 remaining the title will head across the Irish Sea for the first time.

“To be honest, I never knew that Steve had gone out,” said Seeley, “I was concentrating so hard on maintaining my lead.

“I just wanted to do what I’ve been doing all season, hitting the front early on and trying to get a break in the first few laps when the tyres are still warm. I kept pushing all race and am over the moon to win the title.

“I’m not sure of what the plan is next, we can keep trying to keep this winning streak going until the end of the year or we could move up to the Superbike class to see where we are with that.

“That’s where I want to be in 2010 but everyone will know by the time we get to Croft.”

The win concludes a remarkable season for the Carrickfergus rider who started the year riding for the JMF/Millsport Yamaha team. Having won the opening round at Brands Hatch, Seeley then left the team before joining forces with Philip Neill’s Relentless Suzuki team.

The deal was initially on a race by race basis but having gone on to win the North West 200 Superstock race and the next two rounds of the Superstock series, he was signed up for the rest of the year.

His amazing winning streak has marked him down as hot property and all eyes will now eagerly be watching when he makes his British Superbike debut.

John McGuinness salvaged a result for the Padgetts team, taking second, with Adam Jenkinson completing the podium.
