AINTREE, MERSEYSIDE, SATURDAY

After being tantalizingly close for five years, Greg Lewis rode the first 100mph lap of Aintree circuit – not once but twice in the second Ace of Aintree meeting on Saturday.

Lewis had earlier broken the lap record held by Mike Walker for less than 12 months in the Superbike qualifier when he clocked up a 99.789mph lap.

In the seven lap final it was a fight between Lewis and Walker and Alex Gault. Walker overtook leader Lewis coming out of Bechers only to lose out again at the end of the long straight. All three riders did 99mph plus laps but Lewis was the quicker breaking the race record which was also held by Walker by 0.4mph.

Gault was first off the line in the Powerbike final which he kept for all five laps leaving Lewis and Walker to do battle for second. Walker was less than half a second ahead of Lewis until the fourth lap when Lewis outbreaked Walker and set after Gault clocking up his first 100mph lap. He went even faster on the fifth lap with a speed of 100.407mph but back markers slowed down the pace after that.

Lewis was given a lap of honour after the race. Gault broke Walker’s previous record by nearly one mph.

John Dieterman Senior was also a double record breaker in the up to 500 Forgotten Era class.

However, the day was marred by a multi-sidecar accident in practice which included reigning champions Dave Holden and Rob Coward. Both were taken to hospital but their Formula 1 outfit was hurt more than the occupants.

BILLOWN, ISLE OF MAN, SATURDAY

IAN Lougher raised his tally of TT wins to 11 in the space of a couple of hours when he scored a 125/250 double in the two-stroke events at Billown in the Isle of Man on Saturday.

At the end of a tiring fortnight, in which he reached a record number of 106 starts, the 45-year-old Welshman won the opening eight-lap legs of each event by a comfortable margin after sparring partner and friend Chris Palmer suffered a brace of seizures with his Hondas after a gallant fight.

Lougher sat pretty in the deciding legs and although more than three seconds down on Palmer in the 125 class he was the overall winner from Barnes Racing team-mate Roy Richardson, with William Dunlop third overall.

It was a similar story in the 250 event, where Lougher was the eventual winner from Michael Dunlop and Barry Davidson with identical results in each leg.

John Burrows won the 1000 support race from Mark Parrett and Manxman Stephen Oates. Blackpool’s Roy Richardson took the 600 honours for the second successive year.
