Croft British Superbikes: Shane Byrne crashes in Free Practice 2

1 of 1

British Superbike Championship leader Shane Byrne has highsided his Airwaves Ducati ten minutes into the second 50-minute free practice session of the day.

Byrne, who was fastest in the first session this morning, crashed crashed on the exit of the Esses causing the session to be red flagged.

Byrne did get into the back of the ambulance before being taken to the medical centre.

Confirmation from the medical centre is soft tissue damage to the left shoulder and he has also lost a tooth.

The 2004 BSB champion currently has a 110-point lead in the championship over Rizla Suzuki’s Tom Sykes, meaning the 31-year old could take the title this weekend at Croft.

However Byrne has been deemed unfit to ride for the remainder of the day and his injuries will be reviewed in the morning.

Sykes had set the fastest lap of this afternoon’s session with a 1.21.155.

But by the time the session was restarted after the recovery vehicle transported Byrne’s stricken 1098R Ducati back to paddock, rain had started to fall.

Because of the imminent rainfall, many riders are opting to spend the session in the garage so far.

A full list of times from the session will be available here at www.motorcyclenews.com when the session ends.
