Reigning world champion Casey Stoner has taken pole position at the Brno MotoGP in a rain-soaked qualifying session.

Stoner set the fastest lap early on with a 2.11.657 around the wet Czech track. Current championship leader Valentino Rossi qualified second, but was unable to get anywhere near Stoner's time and was over a second slower than the Aussie.

American John Hopkins qualified third on his return after suffering an injury during the Assen round. Hopkins' team-mate Anthony West performed well in the wet conditions, posting the sixth fastest time.

Wet weather specialist Chris Vermeulen qualified in fourth on the Rizla Suzuki, with returning team-mate Loris Capirossi posting the ninth fastest time.

Sylvain Guintolli rounded out the top ten.

The Tech 3 Yamaha pairing of Colin Edwards and James Toseland qualified 15th and 16th respectively, with Jorge Lorenzo occupying the last spot of the grid in 17th.
