KTM propose 500cc twins to replace 250GPs

KTM has unveiled plans for the current two-stroke 250GP class to be replaced by 500cc four-stroke twins.

In response to Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta’s Le Mans proposal to introduce four-stroke machines between 625 and 650cc in 2011, KTM has unveiled its own concept for the 250GP replacement class, which was revealed to MCN.

KTM boss Harald Bartol’s blueprint is for prototype bikes with restrictions to stop them becoming too expensive. 

Bikes will be homologated at a specific price and each manufacturer wishing to participate will have to produce an annual minimum amount of 10 to 20 machines. Spares, chassis and engines will be offered at pre-approved prices.

Bore and stroke will be free with a rev limit of 16,500rpm. Pneumatic valve and oval pistons will be prohibited and engines must feature steel con rods.

No restrictions will be enforced for electronics, but a maximum number of pins will be available to limit the variables allowed into the computer. No traction control or other rider aids will be allowed.
