MCN overall verdict rating is 5

The KTM 690SM is simply put the best road going Supermoto bike currently available. Ok it’s not really for competition use but as road going Supermoto bikes go the new KTM 690 is king. Easy to ride with exceptional road manners, practical, yet at the same can be fun when the mood takes you.

MCN rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 4

The KTM 690SM's engine is entirely new and very unlike a single. KTM have managed some kind of trick as the engine doesn’t vibrate your fillings out on long journeys like most single cylinder bikes. There’s also more power on tap than the competition, with a true top speed around the 110mph mark and more.

Ride and Handling

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

OK the KTM 690SM is not an all out supermoto race bike but its handling isn’t too distant. It turns really quickly due to the wide bars and very light steering. Even as speed its stable and the suspension gives great feedback.

Equipment

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4

The new KTM 690SM may be slightly more expensive than the competition but for that you get WP suspension, massive Brembo radial brakes, and a slipper clutch. Not only do the exhausts look gorgeous but they add a few extra ponies

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 2.5

Without putting some serious miles on the KTM 690SM it’s hard to test reliability. However I’ve never had a problem with KTM build quality in the past and the new bikes feels secure and well put together.

The KTM 690SM is the most expensive out of the direct competition, but you have to pay for quality and to be honest its worth it. Quality components and a reliable trustworthy name. Problem is at nearly £6000 it may be slightly too expensive for some. Find a KTM 690 Supermoto for sale.

I bought the SMR partly due to the reputation for reliability. Wiring loom needed replacing after 9 months - ok this was covered under warranty, but when the splines on the gearbox output shaft were worn away to nothing, KTM efused to fix this under warranty because I was 300 miles late on getting the bike serviced! I will never buy another KTM.

Unbeatable on the tight and twisty bits. Going into a corner, wrong speed , wrong gear, wrong line....no problem instantly get it all back in order and exit with a grin from ear to ear. Most fun you can have with your clothes on. Cross between a big motocrosser and a Manx Norton

Well to say i am dissapointed would be an understatement, i had a good look at all reviews before buying and could see nothing to worry about. I bought the bike to get me to work during the winter time as they make off road bikes i thought there would be no issue. 1st thing to fail during the warranty period was the the hydraulic clutch slave cyliner, not good as it failed while riding. 2nd was the failure of the ignition system, this i traced to the connector block under the headlamp which had been completely corroded away to a green goo, easily fixed with new bullet connectors. Then the ignition failed again, this time there where multiple failures of the ignition loom including the master relays which had completly disolved. This has resulted in the bike being returned again under warranty for a full electrical loom/harness replacement which is no small job. Overall i like riding the bike but as i have found the electrical system can not deal with winter conditions at all so beware, it is an issue that KTM are aware of, i do not know if i will get an improved loom to cure this but if not i will have to go back to the good old reliable Honda!!!! It would help if KTM sealed the large oblong hole under the headlamp that lets all the water in and put a front mudguard on it that is actually practical!!

Have owned this bike from new about 18 months now.Initially all was good the handling is superb with plenty of power to go with it. However I have suffered some major reliability issues. Firstly the engine needed a major rebuild at 4000 miles as the big end bearings failed!!! Then over the last couple of months I have had electrical problems. The clocks and dash have been replaced along with various connectors etc and currently it is having the complete wiring loom replaced. Although this is all under warranty it has meant that I have been without a bike for long periods of time. What do I do when the warranty runs out!!!!!!!!!

This is the first bike of this type that i've owned, having previously had Suzuki 600's. I love the look of this bike. Totally individual with it's beaky front end and upswept exhausts. Full of trick goodies such as WP fully adjustable suspension, Brembo radial brakes and lightweight Brembo wheels. The engine is very impressive, delivering good power right through the rev range with superb low/midrange torque. My two main complaints would be the seat gives you a numb bum and the fuelling is slightly snatchy on the pick-up, on and off the throttle at lower revs. A great fun bike. Makes you smile after every ride
