A fire chief in Massachusetts, USA has written off his Harley Davidson motorcycle after he collided with a bear that was in the middle of the road.

Worcester District Fire Chief Frank DiLiddo was going round a corner and says he was travelling at approximately 40mph when he saw the bear in the middle of the road.

He was unable to brake or swerve to miss the bear and he hit the bear and was then thrown into the opposite lane, with the bear lying motionless in the road.

DiLiddo assumed the collision had killed the bear, but the bear got up and walked to the side of the road for a lie down. After a while it walked off.

The Harley Davidson DiLiddo was riding was very badly damaged in the incident. “It might be totaled,” he said.

The fire chief suffered no broken bones but says his right hand is ‘unusable’ and will require treatment.
