BSB Brands Hatch: Race two report

Leon Camier made it two from two this afternoon when he took the second British Superbike race at Brands Hatch on Sunday. The Airwaves Yamaha ace grabbed the holeshot and was never headed during the 20 laps as he took his 13th win of a dominant season to extend his Championship lead to 104.5 points! Not even the intervention of the pace car could deny him and in a repeat of yesterday’s opening race, he led home Broc Parkes and Stuart Easton.

“I’m absolutely made up with that,” said Camier, “it’s hard out there with the heat but I’m thrilled to get that win and equal Niall Mackenzie’s record of 13 wins. I’ll try to get another one later today but I’m sure it will be another hard race.”

It was Camier who, for once, made a good start and he led the field at the completion of the first lap from Parkes, Easton, and Karl Harris but Michael Rutter was at the back of the pack and he only lasted one more lap before retiring. However, on the fifth lap a huge crash at Hawthorn Bend involving David Johnson on the Maxxis Yamaha brought the pace car out as the rider was attended to and the protective barriers re-arranged. The car remained out for four laps and that, naturally, allowed the pack to bunch up but it made no difference to Camier and as soon as racing resumed on lap 9, he slowly extended his lead.

Pulling away by a few tenths each lap, Camier’s lead was up to 3 seconds at three quarter race distance and he eventually took the chequered flag by 4.534secs. Parkes was never threatened for second and he was over 3 seconds clear of Easton at the conclusion of the 20 laps.

Behind Easton, Harris held fourth until the 17th lap when Tommy Hill slipped through along Pilgrim’s Drop and a lap later the slow starting James Ellison pushed him back further to sixth. Steve Brogan and Chris Walker had been dicing with Hill and Ellison but the HM Plant Honda rider made a mistake at Druids on lap 14 and Walker retired on the penultimate lap.

That allowed Karl Muggeridge to take 7th with Brogan regrouping for 8th whilst Graeme Gowland and Sheridan Morais, who made a terrible start from the front row, claiming ninth and tenth.
