West quits Supersonic BMW for QMMF in Moto2

A week before the first race of the BSB season, Anthony West has walked out on the Supersonic BMW team to join the QMMF Racing Team in Moto2.

In a press release from QMMF, West is quoted: “It’s great to be back in Grand Prix racing, with a team that operates on such a highly professional level and with the support of Moriwaki, one of the most experienced and highly regarded manufacturers.

“We haven’t had the chance to go through the pre-season preparations together, so we can’t expect miracles at the team’s home Grand Prix of Qatar next week. But I’m really excited about this opportunity and I’ll push to the maximum to get the best possible result!”

West had originally hoped to return to the blue-ribbon class of motorcycle racing this year with a Claiming Rule Team (CRT) in the MotoGP category but the deal fell apart due to financial problems.

West was then thrown a lifeline to continue racing by Supersonic BMW in BSB but the deal lasted just one shakedown test on the S1000RR.

West explained in the QMMF press release: “My goal is and always has been Grand Prix racing. I am sorry to turn my back on the BMW Supersonic Team, who gave me the chance to continue my career.

“At the same time, I am happy they understand my decision and I wish them all the best for this season.”

West replaces fellow Australian Damian Cudlin in QMMF Racing, who had, say the team, struggled throughout the pre-season to get the right feeling with the bike and to get closer to competitive lap times.
