Chatter relief for Edwards

Colin Edwards believes Yamaha’s chronic chatter problems that dogged the YZR-M1 990cc machine at the start of last season also affected critical stability under braking.
Braking stability was a constant complaint of both Edwards and team-mate Valentino Rossi in 2006, and the problem transferred to Yamaha’s new 800 during winter testing for the new world championship.
Edwards and Rossi made a big breakthrough in their latest test session in Malaysia where they were comfortably fastest on both race and qualifying tyres.
Improvements came from an Ohlins rear shock change and the double World Superbike champion said: “We had the bike a certain way for so long and it goes all the way back to the chatter that we had last year. We f**ked around with the rear shock to cure the chatter and made it better and then once we got the new chassis that didn’t chatter we kept the old shock set-up.
“What we should have done we didn’t really understand it was a problem because you are on something for so long that it just feels normal.”
