WSS: Sofuoglu wins: Jones fourth

Kenan Sofuoglu, Hanspree Honda’s lone rider for the weekend, has won the third round of the World Supersport Championship at Donington to extend his lead at the peak of the table.

The race was red flagged midway through with Sofuoglu just leading from from Robbin Harms of Denmark, Japans Katsuaki Fujiwara and pole sitter Pere Riba.

On consecutive laps before the stoppage Sofuoglu gestured angrily to his pit crew about a problem, which we now know was with the clutch.

From the restart Sofuoglu, Harms and Riba hit the front again, and after working his way through to fifth before the stoppage, dragged ex-Foggy Petronas rider Craig Jones with them.

Fujiwara broke James Witham’s lap record with a 1.33.45 in the second half of the race, and diced with Sofuoglu and Harms for the win right to the flag.

Sofuoglu crossed the line first, and after numerous passing manoeuvres in the final couple of laps, Harms finally made the overtake stick at Goddards on the last lap to take second.

Craig Jones finished fourth after starting the day from 19th on the grid, and with Riba way down in the second portion of the race, climbed to fourth overall.

With Charpentier, Curtain and Parkes all crashing on Friday and missing today’s race through injury, Sofuoglu now leads the standings by 27 points from closest rival Fujiwara.
