Silverstone Stoner’s standout ride, says Jerry Burgess

Casey Stoner’s brilliant victory at a wet and cold British Grand Prix at Silverstone back in June showed why he was crowned 2011 MotoGP world champion, according to fellow Aussie Jerry Burgess.

Stoner mastered appalling conditions to dominate the Silverstone clash while his main rivals were making big mistakes trying to match his stunning speed.

Jorge Lorenzo, Marco Simoncelli and Ben Spies all crashed out while Stoner finished a massive 15.1s clear of Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso.

The British round was also a race in which Stoner inflicted humiliation on Rossi, who finished 64 seconds behind on Ducati’s struggling factory Desmosedici machine.

Burgess said of all of Stoner’s nine wins so far in his debut season at HRC,

Silverstone was the standout performance from his perspective.

The Aussie told MCN: “His ride in Silverstone is one that stands out to me. They were atrocious conditions and those behind him fell by the wayside trying to keep up with him. In a race where he could have been more conservative, he was inch perfect for the whole race and I think that was one of his great rides.

“To be honest they’ve all been good rides and he’s on a bike that gives him the ability to ride in a way that he doesn’t have to get away from the other people. Some of those races he’s been third and gone to the front and won and I don’t think that was a luxury he had at Ducati. I think he had to get to the front to get clear track to be able to ride the Ducati in the way that it has to be ridden.”

Stoner clinched his second world title with victory on home soil in Australia last weekend.
